We search year-round for speakers who will inform and inspire, surprise and delight. TEDxGateway isn't a typical conference, and the TED audience has high expectations for the speakers – amazing individuals who invent game-changing devices, run the world's most admired companies, design its best-loved products and create ground-breaking media. TEDx also seeks out emerging artists, scientists, thinkers and doers, introducing them to the TED community well before they hit the mainstream.
How are speakers selected? Conference speakers are selected by our curatorial team who identify and investigate ideas and innovations that matter. We invite prominent experts, artists, activists and many others to attend and present our signature TED Talks in their areas of research and expertise.
If you know someone who belongs on the TEDxGateway stage, or if you belong there yourself, we want to hear from you! Learn more about speaking at TEDxGateway, then use the speaker nomination form to tell us why this person would be well-matched to the TEDx stage.
Nominate a Speaker
Breaking Barriers begins with a simple belief: extraordinary ideas often live just beyond convention, waiting for a stage willing to hold them up to the light. This salon gathers thinkers whose work reframes what is possible, offering audiences a chance to encounter perspectives that travel far beyond a single evening. The atmosphere is intentionally intimate, allowing each conversation to breathe and each story to land with weight and clarity.
The curatorial search runs throughout the year, scanning for voices that inform, inspire, and occasionally disrupt comfortable assumptions. Speakers are chosen not for celebrity but for the originality of what they bring forward: a new way of seeing, a question freshly framed, a discipline re-imagined. Emerging researchers, artists, activists, and builders are all considered alongside more established names.
Rather than a typical conference format, the experience leans into the salon tradition: shorter talks, deliberate pacing, and space for ideas to ripple through the room. Audiences are treated as participants, not spectators. The goal is to leave every attendee with language for something they had struggled to articulate, and a renewed sense of curiosity about the world just outside their usual frame.
What unites the lineup is a shared willingness to challenge norms across disciplines. Scientists sit alongside mythologists, chefs beside campaigners, filmmakers next to founders. The cross-pollination is deliberate, reflecting a belief that breakthroughs rarely happen within the walls of a single field. Boundaries become invitations when the right people share a stage.
Women whose ideas have reshaped industries and communities are central to this gathering, though the conversation is broader than any single identity. The program celebrates rigor, creativity, and the courage required to pursue a question long after others have looked away. Speakers are chosen for the clarity of their thinking as much as for the scale of their achievements.
Behind every talk lies months of preparation, with the curatorial team working closely with each speaker to sharpen the central idea. Rehearsals, edits, and honest feedback shape stories that must travel without losing nuance. The result is a set of performances that feel both carefully crafted and refreshingly spontaneous, an unusual balance the format aims to protect.
Connection is the currency of the evening, woven into every transition, panel, and shared pause. Audience members find themselves reflecting between sessions, swapping notes on what surprised them and what they want to explore further. The salon format rewards attention, and the design of the evening is built to keep that attention focused and present.
The visual language mirrors the emotional tone: deep, cloud-streaked backgrounds set against warm golden accents, evoking a stage lit just before a quiet storm. Sans-serif typography keeps the focus on ideas rather than ornament, and generous spacing gives each section room to settle. The aesthetic is cinematic without becoming theatrical, leaving space for the speakers themselves to occupy the frame.
Ultimately, Breaking Barriers is an invitation to participate in a culture of careful attention and generous exchange, one that continues long after the lights come back up. Attendees leave carrying fragments of new vocabularies, revised assumptions, and a sense of shared momentum. The salon is less a destination than a doorway, opening onto the larger work of thinking more boldly.
